All Future AMG Models Will Have Plug-in Hybrid Versions

As the Holy Trinity of P1, LaFerrari and 918 has shown us, hybrids are not just for lowering emissions and making nature happy; they can make us petrolheads excited too. And now that almost every major manufacturer is investing big into electrification, their performance divisions have a new tech to play with as well.

One such division is the AMG - masters of turning petrol into thunderous noise and a smell of burning rubber, and they won't let Mercedes-Benz's $10 billion investment into electrification go to waste.

“All the AMG vehicles will be available in the future with plug-in hybrids as an option,” said Mercedes’ head of external affairs for emissions, Frank Overmeyer.

AMG already offers a mild hybridization in CLS53, GLE53, and E53 models, which combine an inline-6 engine with the 48-volt starter and electric motor that produces 22 hp and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm). That system won't be around for long since the emission savings are small, and the EU is pushing for ever stricter emission standards which these new performance inline-6 engines will not meet.

By 2020 all Mercedes models will use the company's third-gen PHEV system, that offers addition 120hp, 325lb ft of torque and 31 miles of electric range only. Some larger models will even have double the range. In the AMG models, expect this system to be tuned more for power at the expense of the range.

“The battery itself and the application, including the electric motor, will be the same, and you can have a significant performance boost that will reduce the range, but the experience will be better,” said Overmeyer.

“Same battery, same drivetrain, different application. In an SUV, it might offer 60 miles, but in an AMG SUV, it will be closer to 40 miles of zero-emissions driving.

Move over V12, PHEV is here

The news came soon after AMG announced their S65 Final Edition, a farewell to the outdated V12 engine they've been using for nearly two decades. And this is good news! AMG V8 already makes more power than the outgoing V12, and with extra 120hp from the electric system, these new cars will outperform their predecessors by a clear margin.

Imagine A45 with 400hp petrol engine assisted by addition 120hp electric motor, or a 700hp G-Class!

But, perhaps, the best of it all is that the new AMG models will not only sound like a thunder, but they will also be fueled by it as well!.
