When people think of wealth and luxury, multi-million dollar cars and the crypto-currency, Bitcoin normally spring to mind. People who have Bitcoins decided it would be cool to buy cars with Bitcoin and more and more millionaires are doing so.

1 Bitcoin (BTC) is currently worth $6,427, which equates to about £4,900. This means you can buy a nice second hand Ford Fiesta with 1 BTC, but rich people don't want that. They want Ferrari's, McLaren's, Rolls-Royce's and even more expensive cars like Pagani's and Bugatti's.

Today we look at some cars which have been bought with the crypto-currency.

McLaren 720S

The McLaren 720S is a fantastic car. Thanks to it's second-generation carbon fibre tub and a 710bhp V8 engine, it is quite a formidable car. Back in December 2017 when Bitcoin was valued at just over $17,000, this particular 720S was put up for sale on Craigslist for just 25 BTC, which at the time was $420,000.

This 720S looks particularly good in its Azores Orange paint job, with 10-spoke alloy wheels, stealth pack, and the factory fitted sports exhaust.

Bugatti Chiron

The Bugatti Chiron is an insanely expensive car regardless if you're paying by conventional methods or by Bitcoin. However, Pagani Newport Beach in California sold a $3 million Chiron to a Bitcoin investor who paid just 225 BTC when the sale was made in January 2018.

Said Chiron was tastefully specified by it's previous owner with an all black exterior and a slightly calmer, grey/black contrasting interior. Some people still argue that the 1479bhp Chiron is now worth $3 million but, the buyer clearly thought it was worth that much to buy it with Bitcoin.

Pagani Huayra

This beautiful Pagani Huayra was also sold at the exactly the same time as the Chiron mentioned above as it was bought by the same person who visited Pagani Newport Beach. This 720bhp work of art was sold for the same price as the Chiron meaning that this was also worth $3 million (225 BTC).

In total, the owner of both the Chiron and the Huayra paid a total of 450 BTC for two of the hottest hypercars of the 2010s.

Is it worth it?

Like real currency, Bitcoin has fluctuated since the start of September 2018. The meaning of this is that Bitcoin's value can go up or down just like any other currency. On 1st Sepember 2018, Bitcoin was valued at £5,552 and today, 26th Spetember 2018, it is now worth only £4,888. That's a £664 drop in less than a month meaning that Bitcoin has lost 12% of it's value.

So if you have a virtual stack of Bitcoin some where, spend it now before it's too late.

  • I was going to use mine to buy a Chiron... but then I thought I'd go for a Kia Picanto instead. It's got 5 seats, you see. Better value.

  • They say Bitcoin is useful for buying drugs, firearms and slaves on the dark web. Or hiring hitmen. I have literally no idea whether any of this is true, but I feel like you could get a decent film script out of this... :P

    • Maybe it could be the plot for Bond 25? Bond buys a DBS Superleggera off the dark web via Bitcoin and somehow it all goes wrong and Moneypenny gets kidnapped
