ALL ROADS LEAD TO PROJECT ONE
AMG IS GIFTING US THE ULTIMATE BIRTHDAY GIFT AS IT TURNS 50 THIS YEAR
AMG bossman Tobias Moers has confirmed that the Mercedes AMG Project One will be powered by the same motor as their championship winning F1 car. AMG used the recent 24 Hours Nürburgring event to provide a sneak peek at the car’s layout and powertrain.
1000hp! Thats the output from their 1.6 litre V6 with an electric turbocharger (MGU-H) and an electric motor (MGU-K). But the Project One will feature two additional electric motors at the front axle to create the aforementioned all-wheel-drive system. Combined, the motors will produce over 745kw (1000hp)
Mercedes Benz says the #F1 engine revs to 11,000 rpm, a fair bit less than the 14,500 rpm of current F1 cars but in a class of its own for production cars. Compared to an F1 car, idle speed has been reduced from 4,000 rpm to 2,000 rpm and each engine will require a full rebuild after 50,000 km.
The Project One can run using only the electric motors for 25 kilometres. There are separate gearboxes for the front and rear wheels with the latter being an eight-speed single clutch unit. AMG hasnt mentioned the weight but its expected to tip the scales at under 1.3 tons (3000lbs), yielding a power to mass ratio of over 550W/kg.
Further evidence of F1 design and technology is visible in the positioning of the battery pack and control unit which sit behind the front wheels to create a perfect balance. There is also a race-car style push-rod suspension both in the front and rear, carbon ceramic brakes and 335 section rear-tyres which, for a road going car, are massive. To put it into perspective, the 2016 Mercedes AMG F1 car that won Nico Rosberg his title ran on 325 section rear tyres.
Just 275 examples are to be produced, each priced at 2.25 million euro (ZAR 32.4million). Interesting enough, it will be manufactured solely in left-hand drive guise and be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017. (render attached)
