An XL-ent Value: Ford Adds STX Special Edition Model to Ranger XL Trim for 2021
The STX Special Edition Package adds value and style to the base 2021 Ford Ranger XL trim.
Ford has always been known for offering excellent value and feature content, even on its lower trim levels. However, when the midsize Ranger pickup truck was (re-)introduced in 2019, buyers wanting more features would have to upgrade to the mid-level XLT trim. Now, for 2021, Ford is offering the STX Special Edition Package that can be added to the Ranger XL, adding even more feature content and sporty styling to the base Ranger trim level. Read on to find out more about the 2021 Ford Ranger STX Special Edition Package, as well as its added feature content. NOTE: Any any all pricing discussed in this article includes a mandatory destination fee, but does NOT include any applicable taxes, or other fees.
The 2021 Ford Ranger STX Special Edition can be had on either the four-passenger, six-foot (6') box Super (Extended) or five-passenger, five-foot (5') box SuperCrew Cab configurations, with either two-wheel-drive (4X2) or four-wheel-drive (4X4), and starts with the available STX Appearance Package available on the base XL-trimmed truck. This means that a sportier front bumper and front grille are added, as well as front fog lamps, and 'STX' decals on both sides of the pickup box (bed). The front halogen headlamps feature a darkened appearance, and eighteen-inch (18") all-season blackwall (BSW) tires and black-finished aluminum-alloy wheels complete the sporty exterior appearance of the STX Special Edition Package. What's more, the STX Special Edition Package can also be combined with the FX-2 Sport or FX-4 Off-Road Packages, which both include upgraded suspension components, front-mounted tow recovery hooks, black sidewall (BSW) on/off-road all-terrain tires, and 'FX-2' or 'FX-4' decals on both sides of the pickup box. Of course, there are plenty of convenience features included as well, such as keyless entry, power windows and door locks, power-adjustable and heated manually-folding exterior side mirrors with black housings, a security alarm system, and an electronically-locking rear tailgate.
Inside, buyers of the 2021 Ford Ranger STX Special Edition Package are treated to upgraded premium cloth seating surfaces, which are an upgrade over the standard cloth upholstery that's optional on the Ranger XL. However, perhaps the biggest perk of adding the STX Special Edition Package is the addition of the SYNC 3 eight-inch (8.0") touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, full Bluetooth capabilities, an integrated rear view backup camera system, the FordPass 4G LTE Wi-fi hotspot modem, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio with an included paid trial subscription (the SYNC 3 system and SiriusXM Satellite Radio weren't previously available on the base XL trim of the Ford Ranger). To complete the package, silver-painted interior accents replace the base XL's interior color-coordinated accents, and an electric rear window defroster (defogger) and privacy glass windows are added as well.
Ford says that 75 percent (75%) of Ranger buyers picked a customized option package for their trucks, and the STX Special Edition Package only adds to the customizability of Ford's midsize pickup truck. All Ford Rangers are still powered by the 2.3L EcoBoost Twin-Turbocharged Inline Four-Cylinder (I4) gasoline engine producing a potent 270 horsepower and 310 lb. ft. of torque, mated to the Ford/GM joint-venture "10R80" ten-speed automatic transmission. The Ranger can tow up to 7,500 lbs. when properly equipped. Ford builds the Ranger at its Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, which previously assembled the Ford Focus compact sedan and hatchback prior to its North American discontinuation in 2018. While Ford hasn't yet announced pricing for the 2021 Ranger, it did say that the STX Special Edition Package will only add an additional $995 to the base XL model with the STX Appearance Package. The 2020 Ford Ranger XL with the STX Appearance Package ranges from $28,380 for a 4X2 SuperCab model, up to $34,940 for a 4X4 SuperCrew Cab model. Add $995 to the price, and 2021 Ford Ranger XL pricing (when equipped with the STX Special Edition Package) should range from $29,375 for a 4X2 SuperCab model, up to $35,935 for a 4X4 SuperCrew Cab model (that's also without any additional options or packages). Ford has also added customized "Off-Road" accessory packages to the Ranger for 2021, which make the Ranger even more capable off-road.
