You rock up at Silverstone to your favourite car event, you're taken through the entrances and you're driving behind the stands in a queue of cars. You pull up to the coveted tunnel, ready for the cars to blast through. But what do you hear? Is that the slight whir of a Nissan Note?
I sat relaxing yesterday afternoon when this little scenario popped into my head, and what followed were feelings of realisation and worry. With car manufacturers taking more of a B-line towards electric vehicles, hybrids, and low-emission models. Are we going to see car enthusiasts fade away? Before we get into the juicy stuff, we all know that this transition is down to a variety of things our of our hands, and ultimately will have a positive effect on the environment, the consumer and the government.
If we take a look back to the 1990's when car events were widely attended with a huge variety of cars on display, with as many mad and whacky bodykits as you can imagine. Was this the peak of the car community? I've attended a fair few in the last couple of years and I can help but notice the downturn in attendance quite dramatically in some cases, with particular venues being shut down (I'm still sad about Rockingham), with events being moved, and events being cancelled altogether. It only further reinstates the worries I have about the car community.
Are big rumbling V8's just going to be a tale that we tell to our children/grandchildren? Are screaming V12's going to be confined to the limits of a poster and a bedtime story?
In all seriousness I believe that once the initial wave of fully electric vehicles has taken hold, vehicle manufacturers will look to the next generation of performance vehicle, and I'm not talking about things such as the 918, the Mission-E, or Tesla, but the next generation of affordable performance vehicles... think A45 AMG but electric. I think at that point we shall start to see a new wave across car enthusiasts and car enthusiasm in general. I however cannot wait for the moment in 2069 when a large majority of the public are whirring around in their self driving, electric, autonomous vehicles, and I, a silver haired bloke from Yorkshire, will be rumbling down the street in my Chevelle SS.
I'm interested to find out what you think on this subject, so leave your comments below!
