Are crossovers really that bad?

I think I've joined the dark side!

After reading the title you are probably thinking something along the lines of "I didn't think his taste in cars could get any worse." I understand what you mean, I used to hate them too. However, more recently I've realised/decided that maybe they aren't as bad as I thought. Let me explain.

They can't offroad

It is definitely true that a Ford Puma is no match for a Ford Bronco offroad. However, when you think about how many cars specially designed to go offroad actually do, then a crossover starts to make a bit more sense. If you want all the benefits of an offroader when it's on road, but without lugging round the inefficient, heavy and expensive equipment needed to actually go offroad. To me that does make some sort of sense for certain people. For example if all you have ever bought is SUVs then you might want to buy something with a similar driving experience. This clearly isn't the main reason, so keep reading (please)!

Estates are more practical

Estates are usually more aerodynamic and lighter, therefore more fuel efficient. This often makes them faster and more fun as well. The equivalent estate or hatchback does also usually have similar boot space. However, what's often missed is that a lot of estates and hatchbacks are much closer to the ground making it more difficult to get anything from children to shopping in. For elderly drivers even getting in and out of a low car and cause unnecessary discomfort and effort. Another way a higher car can be more practical is by having a higher driving position. This can lead to a better view of the road.

The Driving experience is worse

This is usually true, but not every car needs have a Lotus Elise like driving experience. Some people just want a car that will get them from A to B cheaply, comfortably and safely. Crossovers can offer this along with the other afore mention benefits. Although, certain crossovers are fun, such as the Ford Puma ST.

So do I like Crossovers?

No, not really. However, I can see the appeal for certain people and certain use cases. I don't think they should all be banned and burnt. They are just cars, some are good, some are horrible. Another benefit as we move towards an increasingly electrified future (argue about it all you want, it's going to happen) crossovers make it easier to package the batteries e.g. Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Another reason car manufacturers like making crossovers is because heavier cars are allowed to produce more emissions. Stupid, but true.

I mainly wrote this article because I think people often over look the fact that crossovers do have their place on todays roads. This doesn't mean that I think that there are too many. In fact I think everyone needs move away from needlessly big, heavy and inefficient cars and even cars in general. Now that is an unpopular opinion to end with!

Our family's RAV4 is pretty small IMO and does the commuter job just fine, tho it cant go offroad like a land cruiser

  • I don’t dislike crossovers I drive a VW T-Roc as a lesson car and I love it, it drives great and it’s roomy. My grandparents drive a Mitsubishi ASX and my granddad says he loves crossovers because it’s easy to get in and out of and it’s not a really big cars, so although I wouldn’t buy a crossover as my daily because I prefer the looks and way of driving of an estate more, I do think they are good an practical cars which do have a good purpose

    • I agree. There are not many crossovers I would want to own either, but they are still good practical cars

    • The thing I also think is that I saw a lot of hate on the crossovers kinda the same as electric cars have but I think that you can only hate a sort of car after you drove it but only then you can get the full experience

  • Not for enthusiasts unless you’re enthusiastic about practicality
