Are Front Wheel Drive Sports Cars Any Good?

What are the challenges for a good FWD sports car, and how can they be addressed?

Can sports car be front wheel drive? Are they any good? The Hyundai Veloster N shows us just how fun a properly executed FWD hot hatch can really be. It's a joy to drive, even though FWD sports cars face many challenges. In this video, we'll break down weight transfer, the traction circle, limited slip differentials, torque steer, brakes, how FF layouts impact cost, driving in bad weather, and get into what makes cars fun to drive. Ultimately, which wheels are driven may have a lower impact than you'd initially expect on what actually makes a car fun to drive.

  • Isn't it mostly down to taste? I think F/R/4WD can all be really fun

    • Yes maybe fun in the dirt, but understeer is definitely not fun

  • Truth is... many so called "enthusiasts" are just morons that pretend. There is some kind of "hierarchy" that says 4WD > RWD > FWD and people just follow that without thinking for a second.

But in fact... It all comes down to the car. Some FWD are fucking amazing to drive.

    • FWD gets a bad rap because there are so many understeering FWD cars while so few are GTI fun to drive. But you are totally correct, I've owned all three types multiple times and each can be great, or total crap.

    • Indeed but there are understeering 4WD cars (older Audi for instance), and we have countless crappy handling RWD (muscle cars for instance).

It's always the same issue : chassis is important. Which wheels are driven is not a variable in...

  • I owned a veloster turbo and I loved it. My only reason I didn't buy another one was that I couldn't find on one with the options that I wanted in the time frame that I needed.

    • How long did you own it? Was it reliable etc. My son has a Fiesta ST that is a remarkable car but we’ve been out looking at the Veloster ( the lines are incredible). The Fords been bulletproof I’d appreciate your thoughts on the car.

    • I had it about five years. My only issue with it was a weird issue with the clutch where the clutch wouldn't bounce back. Happened a few times in the winter months about a year into owning it. Took it to the dealer twice and they could never...

  • Great explanation (as always) and I would certainly agree with the final statement. There are good and bad FWD, AWD, and RWD. And I’ve driven enough Golfs, Hondas, Peugeots, Renaultsports, and Euro-Fords (and the i30N), to know that FWD done well makes for a very exciting and dynamic vehicle. As much as I like the purity of having my steering wheels untainted by them having to do the driving. Right now I have an ND MX5 and an F56 Cooper S in the garage. Both are fun.
