Aston Martin DB5: Never Destined for the Masses?

N​o car carries the same amount of sex appeal as the Aston Martin DB5. Due in part to the fact that the DB5 has long accompanied the equally suave James Bond, the classic has garnered a cool, sexy reputation. Unfortunately for the majority of enthusiasts, the DB5's reputation has allowed it to command lucrative prices on the market. Just as discouraging, the DB5's relatives, the DB4 and DB6, also require pockets deeper than the Mariana Trench. The question now bares, how could the average enthusiast snag the legendary grand tourer?

Fortunately for Aston Martin fans, the DB5 has technically re-entered production. Aston Martin began a limited run of DB5s meant to mimic the same car used in the classic Bond film, Goldfinger. The new run of cars will mimic the Bond cars in every way, even offering the Bond Gadgets. More importantly to us gear heads, the cars will still feature the 4.0 Liter straight six and 5 speed ZF gearbox. The only area where the new run of DB5s will fail to mimic the originals DB5's price of $12,000. In actuality the Goldfinger continuation series of cars will retail for over 3.6 million USD, almost certainly forcing the DB5 to elude ownership from the masses.

W​hy the answer is technically not a DB5

A​s an aspiring copywriter, hopefully I can take part in an effective exercise to sell manufactures on a concept. Other legendary icons, such as the Shelby Cobra and 33 Ford, have long been reproduced as kit-cars, due to their desirable and rare nature. Not only have these kits put dream cars in the garages of enthusiasts, they have done so at reasonable prices, while still netting a profit for the manufacturers. Seemingly it would only make sense to tap into the same market which many Shelby clones hold the monopoly on as both are rare 60s sports cars.

T​he Underpinnings

I​n the era of uni-body construction, it stands to reason that the hypothetical DB5 kit car be one unitized shell, not a set of panels to be installed on a chassis, as only trucks today are typically body on frame. Like many other kit cars, this DB5 should be able to accommodate a host of engines and transmissions. Builders could cram the hypothetical DB5 with a 2JZ, or in today's state of car culture, go electric. More avid enthusiasts could still drop the dough necessary for the original 4 liter straight six. Likewise, the aftermarket could provide a host of manual transmissions, countering the rare and pricey ZF 5 speeds originally used.


F​ew cars reign legendary as the Aston Martin DB5. Should a kit car manufacturer come to market with a DB5, they could control the market of vintage European sports cars, even filling the void caused by the overpriced Jaguar E-Types and even the rare Ferraris. Dreamers could finally come to reality, specing out their very own DB5, guilt free of tarnishing an actual classic.

  • If you want an affordable, straight-six, Italian styled British coupe, the Triumph GT6 is still a fairly well-kept secret. The Mk II is the one to go for (best looks and handling). If you want a pared down 2+2 with a bit of luxury, you could always retrim a BRZ in wood and leather.

  • The DB5 is a special car. It needs to live on to inspire future generations of car enthusiasts. I feel that a kit car would be the best way to accomplish that.

  • Really not crazy about copycat kit cars. I think there all junk. Yes, even the 365 Daytona kits, even the 356 kits. I have NO respect for people who go too far and paste real manufacture emblems on these builds, like on a fake Ferrari.

    • I feel that's definitely a large part of the reason one has never hit the market. I believe Shelby sued Factory Five and lost. Perhaps a similar scenario could occur, but it is still unlikely.
