If you want to be among the first people in the United States to have a vehicle with laser headlights, then you need to be one of the 25 people who order the $230,450 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus Exclusive Edition. The high-tech supercar is now debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
In Europe, vehicles like the R8 LMX special edition and BMW i8 have been offering laser headlights for a few years. However, the units were actually too bright for U.S roads. The Department of Transportation hasn’t allowed the tech into the country – until now. Owners will need to take friends for a drive to show off the special lights because they will only activate at speeds above 40 miles per hour (64 kilometers per hour).
Buyers of the R8 V10 Plus Exclusive Edition not only get the first laser high beams in the U.S, but they also have the company’s first use of dynamic turn signals. The tech probably doesn’t provide much of a functional benefit but means more bragging rights for the new owners.
The German automaker loads these models with a bounty of amenities from its Audi Exclusive list of accessories. Inside, customers will find two-tone black and orange leather and look up to find an Alcantara headliner. Upon opening the door, buyers fwill discover illuminated door sills with a carbon matte finish.
This special edition exclusively comes in Quantum Gray for the exterior with an orange stripe and exposed carbon fiber sideblades. They all ride on high-gloss 20-inch wheels in an anthracite finish, and carbon-ceramic brakes sit behind them. As a final flourish, carbon-fiber trim decorates the front lip, mirror caps, rear diffuser, and wing.
While the laser lights are unique to this edition for now, we suspect that Audi would eventually offer them at least as an option on the standard production R8. Until then, the buyers of these 25 cars in the U.S. can among the brightest drivers on the block.
