Austria 2017 qualifying - The rundown

Q1

The main Saturday action started on a sharp 2.00pm local time in Speilberg with the two Saubers Wehrlein and Ericsson. Roman Grosjean went for an off road adventure , narrowly missing the barriers in sector 3. For the front runners, it was Hamilton in 1st, Vettel in 2nd and Bottas in 3rd. The five unlucky knockouts being in order, Jolyon Palmer in Renault, Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll in the Williams and Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein in the two Saubers.

Q2

It was an uneventfull q2 with Valtteri Bottas setting the fastest time of a 1:05.760 followed by Sebastian and Lewis. Those who were Eliminated and will start 11th to 15th were Nico Hulkinburg - Renault, the two Mclarens, Daniil Kvyat - Toro Rosso and Kevin Magnussen - Hass, who did not complete a time.

Q3

Q3 was a great session filled with a small amount of drama when at the end of the session, Hass driver Roman Grosjean's car stopped on the side of the road in sector 2 at the end of the session. The stop was the effect of a faulty clutch. Shortly after followed a speeding Max Vestapen into the gravel trap in sector 3. These incidents caused a double yellow flag which ultimately ended the session for any other car trying to submit a faster time. In the end the results were:

Hamilton will start 8th because of a 5 spot grid penalty for a gearbox replacement.

Shortly after followed tense moment after qualifying during the Post Qualifying interview with Davide Valsecchi. At the end of the interview, (on the track) Davide Valsecchi suggested the two rivals Sebastian and Lewis shake hands to which Lewis replied "we've already shook hands" and walked away. This made sparks fly as the action would take nothing and would show that the Baku incident was "water under the bridge." Could there still be tension between the pair? We shall see tomorrow in the 2017 Austrian Gp.
