Ever since its foundation in 1955, Autobianchi had always focused mainly on the production of small cars. Only after its acquisition by Fiat in 1968 opened a new series of production opportunities.
Just a year later, the production of the Runabout roadster with the collaboration of the Bertone body shop (whose project was the work of Marcello Gandini) was scheduled.
Based on the chassis of the new 112 covered by an aerodynamic body inspired by racing motorboats, the car equipped a 1.1 8V four-cylinder 55 hp engine managed by a four-speed manual gearbox.
Although the car had indeed interesting merits, it was never produced because the Fiat management decided to reuse the project for the production of the next X1/9.
Although the Fiat X1/9 is very beautiful, the runabout series production would not have displeased me at all, given its unique design. And what do you think?
Thank you to Valentina Zanola and Alessandro Renesis for the cooperation
