Behold the Fanatec CSL Elite McLaren GT3 steering wheel
Add a touch of realism to your PC, PS4 and Xbox One racing games with a replica McLaren GT3 steering wheel.
Big fan of McLaren, got money to burn and prefer your video game steering wheels to be of the Fanatec variety? Today, my friend, is your lucky day.
Having been delivered to early bird buyers, the Fanatec CSL Elite McLaren GT3 steering wheel attachment is now available for lesser mortals to pre-order. It is priced at €179.95, including VAT but excluding delivery.
Mmmm dual-clutch system
Fanatec and McLaren worked closely on the GT3 wheel, which allowed the former to gain access to the original CAD design files. As a result, the end product is an 'exact replica' – ignoring the addition of gaming-specific buttons, of course.
Even if the McLaren design isn't your cup of tea, it is a noteworthy product because it is the first Fanatec to include an F1-style dual-clutch system comprised analogue clutch paddles and rocker-style shifters made of anodised aluminium.
Buttons galore
The 30cm-wide CSL Elite McLaren GT3 steering wheel also comes with a 1-inch, 128x64-pixel OLED display in the centre, which replaces the usual fourth rotary encoder. In doing so, greater functionality has been provided.
Compared with other Fanatec steering wheels, the CSL Elite McLaren GT3 is also the lightest in the range, at 1,045g. Not that you have to hold it when attached to the steering wheel column, but supposedly being lighter helps improve the force feedback effect.
Other functionality includes two 12-way multi-position switches, a Fanatec 'Funky Switch' five-way digital joystick, seven basic buttons, numerous plastic button caps to indicate custom functions, two rocker switches and a new exhangeable quick release system.
The shape is perhaps not so good for the more drift-inclined racer
The CSL Elite McLaren GT3 steering wheel works with most Fanatec bases, including the ClubSport V2 and V2.5, but not the ClubSport 1 and 1.5. This is because of 'electronic reasons', so says Fanatec.
As an officially licensed Xbox One product, those who subscribe to Microsoft's latest gaming console will be best served but it also works on PC and is 'PS4 ready'.
We have the latest CLS Elite steering wheel in our possession (as well as something we are unable to talk about yet) and will be bringing you the verdict in the near future. But you should know that, based on first impressions, the quality really is impressive.
