BENETTON B186: UNITED COLORS OF FORMULA 1
In 1986 Benetton entered the Formula 1 championship as an independent team after years as main sponsor
For some time the Italian clothing company Benetton was the main sponsor of the Tyrrell and Alfa Romeo teams, but in 1985 he managed to detect Toleman who had ended up in a serious crisis due to the lack of an adequate supply of tires and inefficiency of the Hart 415T engine.
The new management of the team entrusted the South African designer Rory Byrne to create a car that was suitable for implementing the new four-cylinder BMW M12 / 13 1.5 Turbo 900 hp engines managed by a six-speed Hewland manual transmission.
The new B186 was thus created, based on a monocoque carbon fiber frame separated from the body to increase its torsional rigidity.
Entrusted to the drivers Teo Fabi and Gerhard Berger, the car proved extremely fast but the BMW engine was subject to numerous breakdowns which affected the season of the British team. Nonetheless, the Austrian driver managed to finish 3rd at the San Marino GP and win the Mexican GP.
