Best of 2021
As another stressful year comes to an end, it is time to look back at the best (and worst) of 2021
2020 was a lost year, and a great proportion of 2021 was the same. It does not seem to end anytime soon, with new threats emerging from nowhere. The globe with life has been going through a hectic period. In the meantime, the diecast fraternity were gifted to some remarkable new castings in this year, especially in the 1/64 scale. I guess now is a good time to look back at what made it to your home from the shop the fastest, and why.
Even for just one scale, the list seems to be a tough one to prepare. The dominant forces in 1/64 came to the party with their guns blazing; Mattel rewarded the collectors with some epic castings this year, Takara Tomy gave no rest to the wallets with their brilliant Tomica mainline, Premium and subsequently the Unlimited series, and of course the Limited Vintage classics. Relatively new players TSM delivered some incredible castings throughout the year (although well beyond their planned date of deliveries lol) Tarmac Works overpromised and underdelivered with their so-so QC, and Inno64 unleashed some excellent stock and modified replicas. Apart from the established pack, the last two years have seen the rise of newcomers that truly change the game. Ignition Model finally entered the 3 inch game, Master and GCD (Keng Fai) never fail to impress with their releases, and other brands including Model 1 and XCartoys have presented some pleasant surprises.
It will take me quite a while before I can look back properly at the year that is almost over, and come up with a list of excellent new castings. It would be incomplete without mentioning the most underdelivering new castings as well; stuff that made your wallet tingle in preproduction form, only to realize the disappointments they turned out to be IRL. Meanwhile, the floor is open to all of you to introduce your choices as well, not just in 1/64, not just in diecast, and maybe we can have a final vote at some point. Looking forward to hear from the good ol' LaLD community! Cheers!
