It's not long before all new sports cars in the UK will have to be electric. But while carmakers are working out how to make them just as exciting, here are the best on sale right now.

1. Porsche Cayman GT4

Porsche is pretty good at sports cars. The Cayman GT4 is one of the very best it's ever made, despite not costing anywhere near the most. It combines Porsche's simply staggering 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine, the option of a manual gearbox and motorsport-inspired aerodynamics.

Nearly everything about the GT4 is fantastic. Its noise, its steering, the way it looks...the list goes on. If you have the budget and you're after a sports car, you simply have to try one.

2. Alpine A110

Alpine’s A110 continues to set the bar high for driving excitement thanks to its well-judged controls and punchy engine.

A new ‘S’ variant gives even more focus to the A110 package, though even the regular model feels as involving and accurate as you’d want a sports car to be.

3. BMW M2 Competition

BMW M cars have been getting bigger, more powerful and faster over the years, to the point that they sometimes feel too a bit much for UK roads.

The BMW M2 Competition is a lovely size, has the right amount of power and sublime handling, making it one of the best M cars BMW makes today. Those after the best badge will want the BMW M8, but those in the know buy an M2 Competition.

4. Mazda MX-5

The Mazda MX-5 is one of the cheapest ways to put the wind in your hair and a big fat grin on your face. It has its engine at the front, drives the rear wheels and seats two people in the middle.

It's the perfect sports car recipe, made better by the fact you can get its roof down and enjoy the open air. It's also superb fun to drive, proving power isn't everything.

5. Toyota GR Supra

The Toyota Supra has already made waves in the sports car segment, bringing devastating speed as well as a surprising level of refinement.

Though its BMW underpinnings do mean it has a slightly German feel to it, the new Supra’s design genuinely stands out from the crowd and certainly helps to distance it from the Z4 with which it shares many components.

6. Porsche 911
