With all the talk about the new 911 RSR, I figured it would be a good time to reflect. The original Carrera RSR was sold to racing teams in 1973 for the International Race of Champions (IROC) and raced in several major sports car races in the mid-1970s. No not those crappy IROC Chevys of the 80's. These were epic 1973 911 RSR's. Even a prototype 911 RSR Turbo came second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1974.

The IROC Championship Carrera RSR models were fitted with the 2807cc engine and a flat "whale tail" in place of the traditional ducktail spoiler. The sohc flat 6 put out 280bhp at screaming 8000rpm and sent its power through a 5 speed gear box. It was also fitted with an oil cooler snugly into the fiberglass front bumper.

I got the chance to pick over this white 911 RSR that originally belonged to Mark Donohue. He was the first driver to win the IROC championship in 1974. Donohue's win in the fourth and last race of that season was his last win, as he died in a Formula One crash at the Österreichring in practice for the 1975 Austrian Grand Prix. This example currently calls Scottsdale, AZ home.
