Black box - good or bad?

Does it actually make drivers safer?

As part of my insurance policy I have to have a telematics box or more commonly known as a black box fitted to car, the only thing that makes me feel better about this is that all of my friends have to have a black box fitted to their car as well. The black box is the absolute bane of my life. I have a 131MPH 1.8L engine, I want to set it free.

A few days ago I had to do an airport run at 4AM. There is literally no one on the motorway at 4AM. There is no 4AM rush hour. But because of the black box I had to trundle along at 70MPH instead of 90MPH. (If anyone knows how to override a black box or get round it let me know!!!) But this has made me think. Is the black box good or bad?

I know that the black box helps to keep young drivers under control and that they help to slow people down and make the roads safer however, upon speaking to a neighbor who was pissed off by the thought of the black box in my car it isn’t always good.

Some people need to be let loose in their car, get it out of their system, for a lot of people a car is an escape. And escape from life and the problems within, a car allows you to put all of your problems behind you and focus on driving. To a petrol head there’s nothing better than an antisocial hoon round a nice country road. people need to get their speed out of their system at a young age. or it'll stick forever.

Some people need that release and taking away that release and ability to go on a hoon because of a black box seems idiotic. My main priority next year is not getting the black box fitted. I was to be able to release my 1.8. Unless I can get the box overrided.

  • There are ways of fiddling with the black box but if you do have a car crash and the insurance company finds this out, they won’t cover you at all for the crash so it’s not worth the risk.

The black box prevents young drivers from driving in the real world where on B roads and motorways people regularly drift over the speed limit that’s set too low.

They’re a right pain in the arse.

  • Just add a sticker on the rear so people without a black box fitted understand your pain. Here's one I found this Sunday.

  • Once day they will likely be compulsory for EVERY car/driver.
