May,
Many people view the speeding dilemma from a moral standpoint as you have here. It is not correct. God it not put down on the tablets do not speed. This is a human convention and should be approached with logic and reason. As long as we see this as a moral situation the longer the state is going to soak us with an outdated sin tax.
So how about this. I have an economics degree and years ago did the statistics on this. The correlation of speed and traffic accidents does not really exist. At least not in a statistically significant way. The biggest correlation I found with traffic deaths is with the price of gasoline or oil. When gas prices go down, traffic fatalities go up. We can speculate on why, but that is where the correlation is. So Germany is not just an outlier in their low accident high rate of speed. Remember seed limits came from war rations not logic.
It is a myth that you don't save much time speeding. I used to be a 15mph over driver. Now I am more of a 5 to 10 mph over driver. But lets take 10mph. I used to put on 30,000 miles a year. Recently it is much less but lets start there. Let assume all freeway miles as they have less effect on the outcome. 30000/60 you spent 500 hours in the car for the year. If you go 70 or 10 mph over that saves you around 71 hours a year or it gives you 12 minutes a day to check out another drivetribe page. Anyway the state is taking 10 minutes a day from every family with this speed limit regime. Then to add insult to injury they charge you again because you feel morally bad about it.
So if the state has a vote on other populist things like Brexit. Why not put the speed vote to the people? It should be a basic right that lies right up there with say gun rights?
The number of speeding tickets or traffic fines do not depend on if you speed. It depends on how many miles you travel on the road. The more time you are exposed to police or speed cameras the more likely you are to get a ticket. So lets go back to the 30000 miles. I am the first to admit that the reason I have not had any tickets for 2 years is because my millage has dropped dramatically in recent years. So for you to look upon my record and make a moral judgement about what type of person I am is wrong too. We should be cheering bad driving records because what it really means is that these are our most experienced drivers and they do the most driving on average.
My last note because I could go on for a long time here. If we don't start fighting back against this mythical moral dilemma, it will only get worse. With our cars now electronically connected mark my words it is only a matter of time before you get letters in the mail for;
Driving with your check engine light on 3 points
Driving with a low front tire 2 points
Driving without your lights on in the rain 5 points.
Your car was caught driving over white line our gps shows.
Or whatever! You get it. Load up your WAZE or whatever you use and think about the issue of speed logically.
