In 1968 BMW presented its new 2002 and a year later, at the Paris auto show, the management of the German company asked the Italian designer Pietro Frua to make a GT variant.
Thus was born the 2002 GT4, which was based on the chassis and the four-cylinder M10 2.0 8V 120 hp engine of the 2002 TI.
The interior had been derived from the BMW 2500 while the bodywork had been redesigned to have a cleaner and more refined design.

Although the public and journalists were extremely enthusiastic about the vehicle, the GT4 never went into series production as BMW's top management decided to make the new Touring version in 1971.
I consider it an immense pity the failure to build the GT4 in series, perhaps the daughter of an intrinsic fear felt by the management of the German company in wanting to build something very ambitious. But what do you think?
