I'm sure that we've all spilt a drink or two in our lives. Although our parents make a big deal out of it when we are all young, the truth is it isn't that problematic. Well, as long as you haven't got a BMW...

A lawsuit has been filed in California by BrightK Consulting Inc.; the attorney representing them believes that there are thousands of cars affected.

A quote from their lawsuit explains their problem: "When liquid spills into the cup holder, the wires for the SRS (airbag) control module, which sits directly underneath cup holder, get wet and are damaged, causing damage to the airbags. As a result, the airbags can inadvertently deploy."

They claim that holding liquid is the 'very thing cup holders are designed to do'. One small issue with that statement might be that the cupholders are designed to hold the container of the liquid which BMW's lawyers will want to pick at.

According to real-life experiences, it can also shut the car down completely and repair bills are over $2000. BMW do not cover this under warranty.

  • A class-action lawsuit because of cupholders? The first thing that popped into my head: It must be in the States! And sure enough....

    • The USA is the home of the lawsuit after all. It seems that half the adverts on TV out there are for lawyers.

    • I remember back in the 80's, some fool in the US sued McDonald's because he placed his cup of coffee between his legs at the drive-through and sure enough after driving a bit, some coffee spilled out and he apparently burned his crotch. If that...

  • I remember on the first F30 my folks bought, it did not have an alarm. The dealer said that a big (in my opinion, stupid) reason a $52,000 sedan did not have an alarm fitted as standard was due to the fact that the alarm was located behind the center stack and would ruin the iDrive and car computer when the thief would attempt to break the alarm. Load of bull

  • I remember the first bmw (‘90 e30) I was accustomed to didn’t have cup holders. No bmw’s had cup holders then. I was told that Germans don’t like to have food or drinks in the car- I guess they changed their mind. They would sell and install an aftermarket holder that matched your upholstery. Wish I could remember the price.
