BMW has a problem, can Manhart fix it?

Introducing the 635-hp MHX3 600

Manhart is a German tuner that traditionally works with BMW-branded vehicles. You can always see Manhart’s unique fingerprint, especially with the flagship two-tone, black-gold colour scheme. So can they fix BMW?

BMW head of design Adrian Van Hooydonk has often been criticised in recent times for his controversial design ideas, especially regarding the giant grille, and while I don’t necessarily agree that all BMWs look terrible these days, Manhart’s work certainly improved the styling of the X3.

They call it the MHX3 600, based on the BMW X3 M, and powered by a 3.0-litre I6 which, thanks to Manhart, now produces 365 hp and 580 lb-ft. Manhart added an MHtronik Powerbox and there are many available options for the upgraded exhaust systems, including carbon-ceramic ones.

The suspension system has also been updated with H&R springs and they’ve also fitted new (larger) 22-inch wheels. The body kit, painted in Matte Dark Blue (they usually use black, but sometimes they also darker shades of grey or blue) with Manhart’s signature gold-tone strip, is equipped with a new carbon fibre spoiler, side flaps, wing mirrors and a new diffuser.

Only 10 units are available, priced upon request. But the question is: does this look better than the standard X3? I think it does. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

  • BMW has the following 'problem': their cars either look incredibly boring, or incredibly over the top. The X3 is I think the dullest looking car BMW makes right now, together with the identical looking X1. They just have nothing going on. And then on the other end of the spectrum there's the M3 and iX, which both look over the top, but in my mind still better than the X1 and X3/4. And over the top cars are of course not very 'under the radar' which I think is fine but still.. their styling almost gets offensive. I think the only good looking BMW right now is the Alpina B3 Touring.

  • OK, X3 M40i produces some 360-380 PS and the X3 M around 500. This is based on X3 M and, thanks to Manhart, produces 365?

    Too much coffee, Alessandro.
