BMW has put its 'big grille' on the R18 cruiser

Beamer simply can't stop putting big kidney-grilles on its cars and bikes

Look, we had stopped whining about the 3 and 4 series' big grilles. But it seems BMW don't want us to stop complaining about its grilles because the Beamer designers have not put That Grille on the R18 cruiser.

Known as the " the Spirit of Passion", this cruiser is powered by a 1.8-litre boxer engine and boasts 89bhp and 117lb ft of torque. BMW claim that "the design as a whole is based on classic art deco style". I mean, really?

Dirk Oehlerking is the man who has designed this R18 cruiser. He says, "I put a lot of thought into it beforehand. My motorbikes always convey soul, charm and character. They’re outstanding specimens, so they require great care and attention. I have a constant stream of images running past my mind’s eye when it comes to deciding what style I want to focus on."

Mr. Oehlerking also says that when he designs his bike, he keeps on going "until I know in my heart of hearts: that’s precisely it!”

Honestly, the big BMW grilles are getting a bit too much now and the boffins at Munich need to stop putting them on these lovely cars and bikes. Or else the situation might go out of hand.

  • As a fan of art deco, I think this works quite well in a 1930s Cyperpunk kind of way

  • TBH, this grille actually suited the lines and looked way better than those hideous ones on recent M3, M4s.

  • Why does a wheel need a grill? How does it steer.... does it pivot at some point as it looks like it’s fixed.
