BMW rumored to offer 400hp electric hot hatch by 2023
By now we all know the story of Tesla. They are the market leader in electric car tech and production. No Tesla model has yet eclipsed the Nissan Leaf which is the best selling electric vehicle of all time, but when you say electric car, you think Tesla.
A lesser known, but equally as capable electric car company, is BMW. The i3 was a marvel in packaging and it was no slouch in pickup either. Check this video out from 2013 where an i3 takes an M5 off the line for 2-3 seconds.
Hugely impressive because of all that instant torque. But the bigger news is not that the i3 is quick off the line. No, it's that there's a rumor floating around of a 400hp hot hatch electric offering coming from BMW by 2023.
According to Automobile magazine, BMW plans to offer a staggering 25 new electric car offerings by 2023. In that smattering of plug-in prowess, there's an electrified M140e. Now here in the US we do not get the 135i hatch or any of it's variants. So why is this US news really?
Well, with the mass adoption of electric vehicles fully underway, and the fact that Tesla is an American company and dominates that market's news and lexicon, it would only make sense for BMW to bring the electric hatch to battle Tesla and others in the electric transport and enthusiast game.
I've never driven a Tesla or even been driven in one, but I've been in an electric car before and the torque is seriously fun. I'm ICE all the way, but an M variant, electric hot hatch sounds like an absolute blast.
