BMW takes a look back at its X5 E53 Le Mans prototype with a 700hp V12

Name a better prototype...we'll wait.

BMW has a pretty impressive backlog of cars spanning back many decades, but this might just be the most impressive one they have tucked away in the bunker and you've probably never heard of it.

It is called the X5 E53 Le Mans and it's a prototype which has been fitted with, you guessed it, a Le Mans V12 which produces 700hp.

This was purely an experimental car, but it did see some track time. In fact, this exact car went around the Nรผrburgring in 7 minutes and 49 seconds which is quicker than a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 and Aston Martin V12 Vantage S.

It is perhaps the most special and impressive SUV ever made, but it will unfortunately never see the light of day. However, the team at BMW group has taken it outside to start it up and it sounds as good as you would think.

Had you ever heard of this before?

  • Yes, it appeared in 1001 Dream Cars, a formative book for me, but it was never stated that it was just a testbed
