BREAKING NEWS: Formula One to go fully electric in 2021

Today (Monday 1st April 2019) the FIA has announced that the FIA Formula One World Championship will be switching to all-electric engines by 2021. In an extraordinary general meeting between Liberty Media and the FIA yesterday, the proposals for all-electric engines were passed as part of the new regulations for the 2021 season.

In a statement, FIA president Jean Todt was quoted as saying the following: "Today marks an important step in Formula One's long and illustrious history. The decision to move to all-electric powertrains has been talked about for years, but only now have we decided to move forward with this idea. Formula One has a proud reputation for being at the forefront of innovations in racing technology, which is being highlighted by the ground-breaking regulations that shall be introduced in time for the 2021 season."

Questions have been raised about the capability of all-electric powertrains in motorsport - especially in single-seater series such as ABB Formula E. However, Formula One management are confident that the technology being used for the electric powertrains will be sufficient for the high-speed nature of F1. At a press conference after the meeting - Ross Brawn, Formula One's Managing Director of Motorsports stated the following:

"Our in-house designers have been rigorously testing a prototype all-electric powertrain for about a year now, and I am pleased to say that based on test results - Formula One as a sport will excel with all-electric engines."

When asked about the power output of the prototype, Brawn was confident that the only difference between the current V6 hybrid engines and the new all-electric engines would be the sound quality: "In terms of performance, it produces the same amount of horsepower and speed of a V6 hybrid - so really, the only noticeable difference that our viewing audience will notice is the sound. Even then, teams will have free range to alter the sound of the engine."

As a result of this announcement, fans having been questioning if these regulation changes will usher in new teams to the sport. As of now, Tesla & Rimac look like they are the favourites to enter F1 - if their recent interaction on Twitter was anything to go by:

WRITERS OPINION - WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE...

I honestly never thought I would see this in my lifetime, but it looks like F1 are actually doing this. Of course, this decision will divide fans - but personally I think that this has been a long time coming, and eventually fans will come around to the idea of an all-electric Formula One (just like they started to love the halo, the current logo, Brian Tyler's musical masterpiece and Valtteri Bottas).

Before I forget, happy April Fools day...
