BREAKING NEWS: Ilott WON'T make F1 Debut in 2021

The Brit is currently fighting for the 2020 Formula 2 Championship.

British Formula 2 Driver announced today that he won't be driving in Formula 1 in 2021.

The Ferrari junior driver currently sits in second place behind Championship leader Mick Schumacher - who many tip to be joining Haas next year. He will instead be remaining in Formula 2 next year with the hope that he can then graduate into Formula 1 in 2022.

Ilot was involved in a crash with Jehan Daruvala this weekend at the penultimate round of the F2 Championship which saw Russian driver Nikita Mazepin close the gap to him in the Driver's Championship - Mazepin is expected to partner Schumacher at Haas next year.

Naturally it's disappointing news for the British driver but with many great quality drivers, like Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkeneberg, out of a drive in F1 for next year too, it's sadly not all that surprising.

    • I feel the same. That's at least two drivers without a drive next year as a result of this now.

  • It does seem a bit odd that he could win the championship without having an F1 drive to move on to, bearing in mind the holes identified this season in several F1 teams not having reserve drivers of their own or not their not having the necessary licence etc, could a reserve driver role not be found?

    • Possibly that would be one way to go, seeing as he won't get a full time seat. Either that or he'll do what de Vries did and go to Formula E for a season and then try again in 2022.

  • What will he do if he wins the F2 championship then? Formula E?

    • I guess so. That would be two years in a row now though that the winner wouldn't be able to move into Formula 1. Not a great look for F1 given that F2 is meant to be a feeder series. I think that between him and Mazepin, Callum deserves the spot more...
