"Sergio is the right driver to partner Max for 2021 and look forward to welcoming him to Red Bull Racing."

Christian Horner

Ted Kravitz was right. Red Bull have just confirmed the news that many of us were hoping would come true - Sergio Perez has joined Red Bull for the 2021 season where he will partner Max Verstappen. Perez has signed for the team with an initial one year deal.

The news comes after lots of speculation about the Mexican driver's future after Racing Point announced they would be dropping him from their team earlier this year. Perez has been on fine form this year, scoring the bulk of Racing Point's Championship points and finally achieving his first win in Formula 1 at the eventful Sakhir Grand Prix.

Perez finished the 2020 F1 season 4th in the Driver's Standings and it was surprising that nobody had signed him yet for the 2021 season. It would seem that Red Bull have finally seen the light however - and I'm sure this will make a lot of F1 fans very happy.

One person who will be less happy about this news is Alex Albon. The Thai driver has just finished his second season in Formula 1 which has been quite a rollercoaster. Initially driving for Toro Rosso, he got promoted to Red Bull after just half a season due to senior management not being satisfied with Pierre Gasly's performance. He adapted well to the team but in 2020 was unable to capitalize really. He was able to get onto the podium in Mugello and Bahrain as well as putting in some decent drives throughout the season but wasn't capable of helping Vertsappen take the fight to Mercedes for either the Driver's or Constructor's Championship. As a result, he will become Red Bull's reserve driver for 2021.

This then confirms all of Red Bull/Alpha Tauri's driver choices for next year as Verstappen and Perez will race for Red Bull whilst Gasly and Tsunoda drive for Alpha Tauri. It must be said that these driver pairings look set to be some of the strongest on the 2021 grid and I can't wait to see them in action.

  • I feel sorry for Albon. Red Bull don't give their #2 drivers a chance. They focus on the #1 and then wonder why the #2 doesn't keep up. Hopefully Checo will be able to overcome this.

    • Red Bull did kind of shoot themselves in the foot driver wise. They couldn't take Kvyat back so soon so promoted Gasly but didn't let him breath for long enough in the car and Alex did a pretty good job for 2019 considering it was his rookie year....

    • I really don't know who at red bull thought that replacing a rookie driver who wasn't able to handle the car with another rookie was a good idea, should have done Gasly/ albon at Torro Rosso for a year, and have Hulkenberg drive in 2020....

  • Best decision ever? I think yes 😌

  • Red Bull has such a brutal and unfair management, it's disgusting and such a shame for this sport. Every body remember what they to Gasly and he proved that what a great driver he is later. At least if they wanted to bring Perez to Red Bull they should've sent Albon to Alpha tauri.

    • Yes the Alpha Tauri is a much easier car to drive. And at least Alex would still have an opportunity to show his stuff. But I think that door was already closed.

    • I think the main problem is that when you have a natural driver like Max, you want them all to be like him but can't make that happen overnight. So yeah it's a little unfair but this is also Formula 1 and is meant to be the best of the best. Albon just...

  • Great decision but... I can’t get why he was so obsessed with getting the RB drive? He was like no F1 and I’m out for a year. Surely an indycar/nascar drive would be more appealing? Do it for a year nice n close to home in Mexico and then maybe come back to F1 as a champion in another category. I don’t think he even considered it but hey ho it’s done now and he’s got what he wanted, bet MV still kicks his arse though 🤣

    • Well I think for him after being in F1 for so long and putting so much blood, sweat and tears into it, another racing category wasn't really an option. Which I can understand tbh. All or note, you gotta respect it. Not sure about Max kicking his...

    • Lawrence basically dumped Checo even if Perez helped saved RP from the brink of disappearing from the grid. That must have factored in.
