At the start of the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, Romain Grosjean suffered a harrowing accident that blew up his Haas F1 car. He is shaken, but otherwise alive, managed to pull himself out of the wreckage, and is currently being examined in hospital. Grosjean suffered minor burns on his hands and ankles, but is otherwise okay.

The following replays on Streamable show graphic imagery and must be viewed with discretion.

Barely past turn 3, Grosjean made contact with Daniil Kvyat's AlphaTauri and careened off to the wall, the car exploding on impact and going through the barrier, leaving only the back half of the car strewn on the track. Grosjean managed to get out of the flaming wreckage as the medical car and marshalls responded to extract the Haas driver out and extinguish the flames.

10:51pm MNL UPDATE: Grosjean now in hospital for further evaluation. Albert Fabrega reports that Grosjean is suspected to have sustained broken ribs.

Reactions on the greater F1 Twitter-sphere have been grim both in the moment and as Grosjean is being taken in for medical checks. From Chris Harris to Jimmy Broadbent, everyone watching is in shock at the scenes.

11:05pm MNL UPDATE: Clearer photos of the aftermath have surfaced from Sky F1 and Reddit, showing the safety cell being wedged into the Armco barrier and the damage from the crash. A user remarked that a similar crash into the barrier killed Francois Cevert in 1973.

11:10pm UPDATE: Motorsport Week reports that the race will be delayed "an additional 45 minutes later at minimum" to repair the barriers. The race is still red-flagged and teams await news on when they can resume racing, though judging from these reactions, the crash has certainly shaken the entire paddock to the core.

11:37pm MNL UPDATE: Green flag, we are racing again.

5:10pm MNL UPDATE: Romain Grosjean sent out a video on his Instagram that Haas F1 reposted on Twitter. He's alright!

Also uploaded is the official replay of the crash. From here on out, this will be the link to watch.

  • Man, I'm still shaking from that

    • HIS CAR EXPLODED, KIRAN! It wasn't just bodywork that was shorn off (that's their job -- to disperse impact energy) but all of the fuel went up in flames, too.

    • I absolutely can't understand how he survived, but I'm thankful!

  • This was totally unbelievable, and very very shocking. I'm glad he's okay.

If I were him, I'd go buy some lotto, as it was obviously a very lucky day.

    • If I were him, I'd just call it a career. That's a crash that'll imprint in a person's psyche, and for all the mental fortitude and training Romain goes through, this is a bit much.

    • To be honest, I agree. I can't imagine. Somebody ran a red light and totalled my car once, and I still have scars, and some anxieties about driving through intersections, and yet, it was a pretty minor accident.

      I can't imagine ever wanting...

  • It was amazing to watch him climb out of the fireball relatively unscathed. The amount of force required to sheer a titanium/ carbon fiber tub and split the car int half was amazing. Glad to hear that he is okay.

  • I'm glad he is ok but he was not driver of the day, he caused that, he cut over and didn't even see Kvyat. It didn't look like he had to do it either, the Alfa to his left was off track and not going to hit him, I think he just saw that clear track on the right up ahead and he went for it. Alonso wished he had a halo when RoGro flung his car over the top of his, this isn't the first major mistake he's had. I would give RoGro a second look in a race, the guy can do some crazy stuff sometimes. Perez was my DotD, he was great other than mechanical failure he had nothing to do with.
