British racer Callum Ilott joins Ferrari Driver Academy programme
The young driver becomes the seventh signing in the academy.
Ferrari Driver Academy has announced Callum Ilott as its new signing, who joins the likes of Charles Leclerc, Antonio Fuoco, Giuliano Alesi, Guanyu Zhou, Marcus Armstrong and Enzo Fittipaldi.
The British driver comes off from his third FIA European Formula 3 season, where he finished fourth in the drivers' standings, after having claimed six race wins with the title-winning Prema Powerteam.
He made his F3 debut in 2015 with Carlin, where he finished 12th overall, while in 2016 with Van Amersfoort Racing, he improved to sixth in the standings - having attained his maiden F3 win during the season.
This is the 18-year-old's second stint with a Formula 1 team, after being selected to be part of the Red Bull Junior Team in 2015 after his stint in the winter-based Toyota Racing Series.
However, with results not coming the way Red Bull had hoped, it dropped Ilott just after the first year, with the British driver then having to run on his own for 2016 and 2017 - until Thursday's announcement.
After having spent three years in F3, it is widely expected that Ilott will graduate to the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2018. But with FDA now in play, it will be for them to take a call, whether he moves to F2 or he competes in GP3 Series.
Ilott has already made his GP2 Series debut in Silvertsone last year with Trident, where he finished 19th and 14th respectively in the two races.
