Can Tesla's Cybertruck Actually Tow Long Distance?

Why Today's Electric Cars Are Bad At Towing

Electric cars are great for many things. They're fast, they're insanely efficient, and they can start with a full charge every morning, eliminating your need for "fuel stops" depending on your daily commute. Unfortunately, electric cars do come with their problems. The two main issues holding back electric cars from a much larger market share, in my opinion, are price, and energy density. Battery packs are massive, heavy, and don't store all that much energy. As a result electric cars are very heavy, and don't have much energy on board.

Thankfully, electric cars make up for their lack of energy by being insanely efficient, so electric cars can still travel very far distances before needing to recharge. But what if we add a trailer into the mix, and tow with our electric vehicle? In this video, we'll work on the math on whether or not towing with today's electric cars is feasible.

  • Very interesting. He touches on the issue that nobody wants to address but he doesn’t vet that out. That is, how does the use of electrical features like heat, AC, etc affect range? All EV makers talk about is range which is most likely under ideal conditions. I want to know what is the range under the worst conditions? Say, it’s raining and just above freezing? Lights, wipers, heat, defrosters, seat warmers, and maybe even the radio are all being used. How far can I go now? I don’t think anyone knows and if they do, they’re not saying.

    • Now there’s a good question

    • Do car manufacturers tell you how much fuel consumption increases (and range per full tank falls) in the worst conditions? Didn’t think so. And unlike EVs, which are primarily affected in terms of range, fossil fuel engines starting from...

  • All this hand-ringing cracks me up. I took my Model 3 on an eight-week, 5000 mile road trip last spring, pulling a teardrop trailer. Didn’t plan our itinerary more than a few days ahead. Charge at a campground overnight, charge when we stop for lunch. Easy-Peasy.

    • Yep, plenty of FUD from people who don’t know what they are talking about.

    • Also, there are videos on YouTube by Bjørn Nyland, who used to drive all over Norway doing Nimber tasks with a Model X towing a trailer, including in the winter. Didn’t seem to stop him.

  • Gotta be honest. That trailer looks kinda cool... without the truck

  • there is a good reason why there are lots of electric lawn mowers in my neighborhood but not a single electric snow blower. Actually two good reasons: not enough power on board for heavy workload and dependability for a critical task.

  • Oh look, the tringle is towing a rectangle
