Captain Slow: Max Verstappen likens himself to James May during Italian GP

Who had this on their 2020 bingo card?

The 2020 Italian Grand Prix was something special. Overtakes, crashes and an underdog victor, the race at Monza was undoubtedly the most gripping race of recent years.

Filled with glorious little moments such as Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton speeding off on his scooter to go and speak to the stewards, and Renault's Esteban Ocon being told to shut up on his team radio, one moment will stand out.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen is easily one of the fastest drivers on the grid, but at the high-speed Mona circuit the RB16 struggled in a straight line.

Complaining about his lack of speed compared to the competition, the nine-time Grand Prix winner likened himself to our beloved James May.

Clearly disgruntled by this dasadvantage, Verstappen took to the airwaves as the safety car was deployed after Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed heavily to voice his opinion.

"Mate, on the first lap deployment, we are Captain Slow on the straights I tell you. It's unbelievable!"

Now we all know May wasn't necessarily the fastest over a half-mile, but there's no need for animosity...

    • Yes I can, he would describe the experience as highly inconvenient.

  • Lets all remember that James May has gone faster in a straight line than any F1 car even if it did only lasted 30 seconds
