Car enthusiast on vacation: Key West

Just what is a car guy to do - in Key West

6w ago

This is the start of a new article series I am starting. If you are reading this article, there is a very high chance are you are a car enthusiast. Sometimes you can be put in situations where it is harder to scratch your car enthusiast itch like say while on vacation, so I thought why not showcase just how you can do that at some of the locations I go tp vacation and make a guide out of it and grow it into a series - first up is Key West, Florida.

Car spotting

This one is really possible anywhere no matter if you are on vacation or your hometown, but in my case when I went down to Key West, Florida in November one particular vehicle caught my eye multiple times.

Saw three Suzuki Jimny (or whatever the many names it goes by) 2 door SUVs in short succession which made me begin to figure out just how can I obtain one myself and I knew if I lived in Key West it would be my daily.

This wasn't my first time in Key West, but in previous years I have seen many people showing off their exotic cars driving down Duval street and heck I even saw a street parked Lamborghini Gallardo once.

Drive by the "Southernmost" Point

Key West, Florida is home to the most southernmost point in the continental United States, but I will let you in on a little secret. You are really taking visiting the second southernmost point. The southernmost is actually on some Navy property that normal civilians cannot access (if you visit it is the point of land that has radar devices and looks like it houses Professor X's Cerebro in it. It isn't that big landmark that you can find tourists lined up down the street, but even so, you can drive by the "Southernmost" Point or as I like to call it, the second Southernmost Point.

Drive by Mile Marker 0

The United States highway US 1 goes from Key West to Maine. It runs over 2000 miles and its Mile Marker 0 is often a tourist photograph spot and you can simply drive and start your trek home or if you dare all the way to Maine.

Have any other car enthusiast suggestions in Key West? Be sure to leave them in the comments below so the next guy can experience them!

  • Now you need to go to the Island of Hawaii and head to the South Point. It’s the southern most point in the United States.

  • Rent a scooter. It's a blast to abuse the heck out of those in Key West. Make sure you go to Sloppy Joes before-hand, have a few, THEN go abuse the scooter. If Fat Tuesday is still on Duval then do that. Margaritaville is a tourist trap. Don't bother. But go scoot around and check out the houses. Interesting stuff in the neighborhoods. No spoilers. Cruise the beach. Then head for the Naval base and check out the hydrofoil. May even give you a tour!

Tell the guy on the highwire, if he's still there, I said hello and thanks for the Key West survival kit tip!

    • Fat Tuesday is still there. I went. Agree on M-ville. I had a 1 year old with us this round, so I wasn't going to waste a scooter/go-kart rental to not use.

    • Nah, drifting around Duval with a 1yo probably isn't a good idea. Glad Fat Tuesday is still there. That place was a favorite when it first hit. NO ONE went there yet. Drinks were cold and cheap. We always went, To the Keys, the two weeks right...
