Carrera Panamericana Day 5

Our friends in the Museo Del Automovil Studebaker Champion had a lot of catching up to do after the previous days oily disaster. The delay caused by the ruptured oil line cost them dearly, pushing them down to an 11th place starting position on day 5. On the plus side the slightly later start time gave Angie a chance to catch up with some of the other teams and give us a walk around the starting line up. You can view her video below, non-Spanish speakers stick with it for the walk around when Angelica shows some of the other cars she is competing against.

Angie's grid walk in Morelia

Undeterred by the setbacks Gabriel and Angie are still firmly focused on the win! With 2 minutes 40.7 seconds separating them from the lead car they had a lot to do. Coming 4th on the 1st stage of the day was a good start and their day continued at a similar pace with a 5th, 7th, 4th, 4th, 8th. Most importantly they put in some great times, with only seconds separating the leaders they have more than made up for yesterdays mechanical failure.

Having started the day 2 minutes 40.7 seconds behind the leader, that gap has now closed to just 1 minute 1.4 seconds. It must be so frustrating knowing that, without yesterdays mechanical failure, they would now be leading. Instead they start day 6 in 6th place but if they can keep this pace up then the podium is still within reach!

The day 5 route of closed stage and fast road sections took them from Morelia to Guanajuato and a parade through the tunnels and cobbled streets of the town. Incredibly the entire course has been lined with spectators with the daily start and finish points attracting huge crowds. Angie found time to share another video with us today, holding her phone out of the car window as the parade of cars arrived in Guanajuato. I can see why the Mexican government are so supportive of this spectacular road race, the more I see of Angie's photos and videos, the more I want to visit, or better still compete, in next years event.

    • Not from me I'm afraid. I'm in the UK, living vicariously through Angie, sharing her experiences with you. Maybe next year, I'd love to do it!
