Ferrari produces outstanding engines and they have been so good at it that they have shared their F1 engines with other teams. Aside from F1, Ferrari has powered some truly iconic classics, and here are some of them.

Maserati GranSport

The Maserati Gran Turismo's predecessor, the GranSport, is thought to have been powered a Ferrari V8. However, there was a controversy as to whether the Maserati GranSport had a true Ferrari engine, because the Maserati's crankshafts are cross-plane as opposed to Ferrari's flat-plane crankshaft in their V8 engines. Nonetheless, the V8 was built from Ferrari casting and was built after Ferrari took full control of Maserati, which suggest that the engine may have indeed been Ferrari's.

Lancia Stratos

The rally dominating sports car designed by Bertone was based on a Ferrari chasis with a Ferrari V6 producing unto 190 horsepower. The engine was indeed the same engine in the Ferrari Dino, and started to be used for the Lancia after the production of the Dino came to a halt.

Fiat Dino

Another car to use the Dino's engine was the Fiat Dino. Ferrari thought that instead of killing off the Dino and its engine, they would make use of the engines to make some profit out of it. The Fiat Dino was available as a coupé or a spyder. The coupe was designed by Bertone, while the spyder was designed by Peninfarina, and in my opinion the spyder is way better looking. If you're looking for a Fiat Dino, the spyder is the one to buy.

Pontiac Firebird Pegasus

A ferrari engine in a Pontiac? Well, why not! The car's initial sketches caught the eye of Bill Mitchell, then the design was modified to carry a Ferrari V12 engine up front. The car also used a Ferrari 5 speed manual gearbox. The highlight of the interior is the custom leather bucket seats and the fine wooden trim.

Lancia Thema 8.32

The lancia Thema 8.32 was I believe the first Ferrari powered front wheel drive car ever. It had a 32 valve V8 engine, hence the name 8.32. The engine produced 212 horsepower and was tuned to suite the 4 door super saloon. The Thema was also the first car to have a retractable rear spoiler that looked very cool.

Asa 1000 GT "Ferrarina"

Fearing that it'll affect Ferrari's reputation and brand image, Ferrari produced a 4 cylinder car that didn't carry a Ferrari badge. The car was built to help fund the Ferrari racing team. The engine was basically a cut of Ferrari's V12 engine that produced 95 horsepower. This car is very rare now.

Which one would you own if you had the chance?

  • May I also offer the *whisper* Giulia Quadraplegico as an option? Although I'm not sure Ferrari would agree...

    Great work Karim!
