Chris Harris claims the Ferrari F40 is ‘the greatest road car ever’
Is he right?
In the latest episode of Top Gear which aired tonight, host Chris Harris claimed the Ferrari F40 was the greatest road car ever made in his opinion and he may just have a point.
This segment of the show was showcasing three of the 90s 200mph cars and the F40 was one of them alongwith the Jaguar XJ220 and the Lamborghini Diablo. Harris chose the Ferrari, of course.
He talked about how involving the driving experience is and how every gear change requires your whole shoulder movement. He also likes how stripped down and 'basic' it is in terms of technology, as it has so little.
On top of that, he explains how much force you need to apply to the pedals to get them moving and how heavy the steering is, all things which nowadays is very rare to find in a car. This was an era when cars weren't computers on wheels, but more an experience on tarmac.
But with all this said, is the F40 really the greatest road car ever made? This is a huge claim but one which may just be correct. You hear journalists describe all sorts of cars as being the best in the world at going around corners or the best steering feel and tread shuffle (which just IS NOT a thing) but very few claim a car is the best road car ever made.
Harris is usually pretty accurate with his judgements, so if he says the F40 is the greatest road car ever made then we might just have to take his word for it.
