David Brown Automotive has announced it will build a limited run of cars based on the iconic Mini, only customised to meet the needs of the 21st century driver.

Based on a classic Mini, the remastered edition combines the iconic Sixties car’s looks with unique coachbuilding construction, modern technology and luxury hand-finished materials. The car will be all hand-built at the company’s new Silverstone HQ in the UK.

Each car is built by hand from the ground up using brand new body panels, that are made in-house to create perfect shut lines. The exterior shape has been refined, visually softened and ‘cleaned’ by de-seaming the silhouette and welding in bespoke structural beams, with additional support struts added for rigidity. The coach-built Mini also undergoes a laborious sound-proofing process to ensure passenger comfort and to reduce road noise in the cabin.

Each car will have handcrafted enamel David Brown Automotive badges and modern details such as puddle lights fitted to each classic bullet-style wing mirror.

The car will come with all of the modern features you would expect from a new car, such as an in-built infotainment/navigation system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a four-speaker sound system, keyless-go, USB connectivity and charging, as well as push-button start and remote central locking.

The interior will feature bespoke sculpted seats with a hand-trimmed interior swathed in British-sourced hides and a combination of paint, leather and fabric finishes to the dash. Premium retro Smiths dials, a David Brown Automotive engraved Moto-Lita steering wheel, and the addition of a cup holder to the centre console will make it one of the most luxurious Mini's ever built.

For the powertrain, the classic Mini engine has been fettled to increase power by up to 50% more than the original unit. This has been paired with a fully reconditioned four-speed gearbox, upgraded suspension and brakes which provides reliability, integrity and improved driving dynamics.

Customers can also personalise their car’s exterior finish, contrasting roof, full interior trim and wheels, and add further options and accessories to make their Mini truly bespoke.

Prices are still to be announced, but DBA maintains Mini Remastered will be highly-exclusive and built in strictly limited numbers.

  • To me, it should take people back to an uncluttered driving experience. Give it a radio (push button presets). Give it descent seats. Give it better build materials. Give it a classic colour choice. Keep it simple. Drivers need fewer distractions.

  • Fell way short of what they could have achieved. Awful styling, ridiculous price tag pandering to the super rich hipsters and still the standard 1275 when they could have added a 5 speed box or 16v head. Cluttered interior with too many gadgets with an ugly screen force fed into the dash. Give a true mini enthusiast 70k and a much better interpretation would be produced.

  • I'm sure it'll be great, but it doesn't really look like a Mini (and I've had 3, one of them from 1959). It looks more like one made from a badly out of focus picture of a Chinese copy. And those rear lights? That was the best they could do?

  • Rear lights ruin the car. Shame
