Morris Commercial, a UK-based automotive engineering and manufacturing start-up, has unveiled its new battery electric light commercial vehicle (LCV) - the Morris JE - which reimagines the iconic Morris J-Type van from the 1950s and 60s.

It's not a concept! This charismatic and eye-catching retro-styled van will go on sale in 2021 priced at an estimated £60,000.

The new JE made its debut at the Design Museum in London and uses a lithium-ion battery powertrain in a modular chassis with carbon-fibre body construction.

Dr Qu Li, CEO and Founder of Morris Commercial said: “It is a delight to unveil the new Morris JE to the world and for us to show what we have been working so hard to achieve.

"From the outset, our vision was to bring a new concept to the LCV market, not just in terms of the battery electric powertrain, but also to introduce a timeless design that takes the aesthetics and appeal of such a vehicle to a whole new level. What we have created is a beautiful, retro design that sits upon a cutting-edge, modular BEV platform, delivering practicality and functionality to compete with the best in its segment.”

The modular platform means it can be adapted into different derivatives such as a pick-up, minibus or camper van easily. Because of its lightweight, it's estimated to have a range of 200 miles.

This is not a replica or continuation of the classic Morris J-Type, but takes its styling inspiration from the minimal front overhang, pear-shaped grille, split windscreen and swooping roofline of the classic.

It sits in the 2.5 tonne segment, the lightest sector in the commercial vehicle market, however it boasts 1 tonne payload and 5.5m³ capacity. There are full-width rear doors and sliding side doors.
