COULD ELECTRIC CARS HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION?
Renault's Season 2 Formula E Car Used A Manual Gear Stick
This is the second video of a five part series where I’ve partnered with Formula E to answer questions about electric vehicles, and this topic was actually inspired by Renault’s season 2 Formula E car, which uses a 2-speed gearbox matched with a single transversely mounted electric motor. What’s super clever about their set up, is that they actually went a bit old-school and have incorporated a manual gear stick, using cables and rods to switch between the two gears, rather than the pneumatic paddle shifters which other teams were using. Renaults solution is simpler, and also lighter, as it doesn’t require onboard pumps or air-tanks for gear shifts.

Wasn’t sure where to post this but I have question.... Why don’t manufacturers use column shifters anymore? we see dial/ rotary gear selectors and push button but mainly centre console. We see an increasing number of electric controlled selection so do we need a centre console selector as it just takes up space? In bigger vehicles such as a trucks/suv this would free up space for a centre seat which in this day and age could have a proper seat belt and even an air bag for the passenger making the vehicle more practical and thus opening up the market for the vehicle at the same time, I know some would say that people might not want this but people generaly don’t know what they want until a manufacturer makes it and it becomes the in thing or the norm again. I wasn’t sure if there was a practical issue with column shifts but maybe we can start a trend back here as sometimes we can learn from the past.
