Could the COVID-19 lockdown lead to an explosion of EVs?

Ssylvan Filippi of Envision Virgin Racing thinks a tidal wave of EVs could be on the horizon

There's no doubting the environmental impact that the COVID-19 lockdown has had. Air pollution has decreased by as much as 80-90% in some areas, showing just how big an influence internal combustion vehicles have on the air around us.

Becky Evans and Envision Virgin Racing have been producing a series on YouTube called 'Lockdown Lowdown', and the first episode has seen Becky interview the Team Principal Sylvain Filippi, discussing what it takes to run a race team during lockdown, as well as the impact this pandemic will have when the automotive world opens back up again.

Looking at the air pollution stats, has this global situation inspired you to think about buying an electric car? Cast your vote in the poll below:

  • Why would they? Gas is super cheap! If anything, I love gassers even more!!

    • Exactly

    • Gas is still way way more expensive than electric. What a junior 1.0 litre rally car spends on petrol on just one event will pay for our electric for almost THREE SEASONS of rallies in the eRally Zoe.

  • I think James May is right. The ICE is going to go the way of the horse. Would it be so bad to drive your EV to a track at the weekend where for a reasonable fee you could spend the day driving a well maintained V8, V10 or V12 sports car at the edge of your own ability? I'm sticking with petrol until manufacturers solve the weight / range problems. But that day is coming and probably sooner than we think.

    • At what level do you need that sorting? Motorsports application or for the road? Either way, it's ripe to jump in now! :)

    • I don't think there's an EV that's as light as my current drive. There's the Prius C, but I'd prefer to go pure EV rather than hybrid when I switch.
