Crikey! It’s the French rozzers with the Alpine A110
Drive to France at your peril
The French Gendarmerie - the National Police Force - is famously fierce when it comes to speeding, and we all remember that Clarkson and Hammond had to learn this the hard way.
Running away from the French rozzers will now be even more arduous because the Gendarmerie has just taken delivery of a fleet of 26 Alpine A110 Pure sports cars. This, according to the government, is part of a process of “rejuvenation and modernization”. Well, yes, they usually drive around in Peugeot hatchbacks or Renault Meganes so the Alpine is quite the upgrade.
The A110 Pure is powered by a turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 249 hp and 236 lb-ft. It may not sound like much but the Alpine is light and agile, it can easily keep up with most miscreants with its top speed of 155 mph a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds.
They could’ve ordered the more powerful (+40 hp) and faster (165 mph) S model but I guess they chose not to waste valuable taxpayers’ money… so they can waste it on something else.
Anyway, the Gendarmes are going to be using an Alpine-branded car for the second time in their history. Back in the 1960s, they used the original A110, fitted with police lights, radio equipment and sirens.
The French Ministry of the Interior released a statement: “These vehicles will allow the police to carry out interventions on the motorway, involving cars in violation at high speed, as part of road safety or judicial police missions (drug trafficking for example)”. Especially if Clarkson or Hammond are at the wheel.
