Crisp Exhaust Notes

Classicmobilia E’News Issue 124 April 2021

Dear Classic Car Enthusiast

We can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel! We hear of classic car events appearing on the horizon, we can smell the fuel vapour in the air, and all we need now is the sound of rumbling engines and crisp exhaust notes in the distance.

The classic car calendar is filling up and looking good, hope and excitement are in the air, and we simply cannot wait.

But (and it’s a big “but”), here’s the burning question on everybody’s lips: when will the borders be open to travel across the water to the place we call Europe, and across the pond to the big USA?

We are still holding our breath, waiting to see if the main events will continue across the world: let’s just hope all doors will be wide open very soon.

Talking about burning questions… what is selling on the open market today? Well, we have seen some really special high-end motorcars being sold through the dealer network and, yes, these have been sold at amazing speed and not at giveaway prices, but is this the whole of the ‘real’ market today?

These unsurprisingly robust sales are supported by the dealers providing the car’s history, adding to its background, which uncovers and explains its identity, in more ways than one.

In general, we have seen some exciting sales being closed and some unbelievably desirable cars changing hands. We have witnessed large collections thinning out and evermore exciting cars being added to them … as always, long may it last.

This leads us nicely to the auction scene and how the classic car world is moving back in time: this is how dealer auctions used to be many years ago. We have enough experience to remember attending auctions which, in the past, were used to move on unsold stock.

There are so many on-line auctions now that it’s becoming a free-for-all carousel, fully loaded and going round and round.

“Do they work?” We believe they do, but how long for?

Moving classics on without history or those with the ‘wrong’ history is inevitable, and the on–line auctions seem to be working for the right operator, but when they raise their ugly heads through an armchair budding salesman, we should get worried.

If you would like advice on buying or selling your classic or straight-talking help with restoration projects, we are here to assist.
