It was the first time, that the "German Car of the Year" (GCOTY) title has been awarded. Out of 59 cars, 12 independent motoring journalists voted for their favourite. The all-electric Jaguar I-Pace won and proved once more that the Germans love the Brits.

After the evaluation of design, performance, ride, handling, future viability and general relevance of each model on the road and at the Bilster Berg circuit in Germany, five nominees were left for the final decision.

You can see in the video, which cars made it to the finals:

After receiving the award, Jaguar Land Rover CEO Prof. Dr. Ralf Speth said, "We are extremely proud to receive this honour from the German media for our first fully electric vehicle, the Jaguar I-Pace. To get such an award in the homeland of premium brands is very precious."

It is not surprising that German car companies are high ranked as well. Second place was reached by the Audi A6, while the Volkswagen Touareg came third.

But the electric SUV from Jaguar convinced the jurors with the fact that "it is not only the first premium EV from an established manufacturer, it also makes uncompromising use of the advantages of an EV architecture. Its performance is impressive, and its design and practicality stand out (…)." said GCOTY spokesman of jury member Jens Meiners.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jaguar.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how surprised are you. Tell me in the comments!

  • 10. Did not see that one coming. Coals to Newcastle................ IMO, this is the best of all SUVs currently available. Given that they will probably not see the mud or dust for which they were intended it is easily the best looking SUV out there. Others might be better off road. Just my opinion.

So as a City Estate, I doubt you could go past this one. Ian Callum has done a wonderful job of this vehicle and although I have doubts about EVs in general, I am over the moon. If there was any one SUV that could tempt me to the dark side, then this is the one. It would be even more tempting if it had other drive trains (obviously but not the EPace or FPace), however given the hoopla over battery powered vehicles, its a great effort.

    • Yes, exactly what I am thinking. If I would ever need something serious, useful and good looking, I wouldn't need to look any further. The I-Pace is my favourite of all reasonable modern everyday cars.

  • Not surprised at all, actually. Everyone seems to be loving it.

    • Even the Germans...

    • To be honest, I knew that everyone seems to love it. But when it came to voting against German brands I wasn't so sure anymore. This is a big statement from German automotive media.

    • ...and the I-Pace was built in Austria. Still has its headquarters in Coventry, UK though.

  • Better get the award now. There is a car coming from California that has greater efficiency and range.
