David Guetta takes #1 spot at DJ Mag 2020
There's not many better ways to celebrate your birthday than this!
David Guetta was one of the very first DJs to make it big in electronic music. Billed as the "Godfather of EDM" Guetta has many awards to his name including winning a Grammy in 2011 and collaborating with well known singer Sia for "Titanium." However, one thing Guetta has been not so successful with is the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ competition.
Having only won it once, you'd think that's all he needed to cement his success within the competition but this was also followed by very good years with positions fluctuating from seventh to fourth. Tonight, he makes history for becoming a double winner of the competition, taking the top spot for 2020.
Esteemed artists like Don Diablo and Nicky Romero performed special performances in the run up to the announcement of the #1 DJ. The reaction on social media was a mixed bag. Whilst some were happy with Guetta's result calling the announcement somewhat nostalgic. Others were quick to mention that maybe other DJs deserved the #1 more than the 53-year old DJ.
Artists like Robin Schulz and Mike Williams, who have had excellent years were placed in 99th and 90th respectively. On the other hand, EDM veterans Tiësto (16th) and Carl Cox (34th) finished substantially higher, once again proving that old is indeed gold.
After what has been a terrible year for the events industry, a crumb of comfort can be found in the sheer volume of great music produced by all electronic music artists this year. Roll on 2021!
