DEBATE: Has Alpine missed an opportunity with the A110S?

The Le Mans weekend was the launch location of choice for Alpine’s newest, most hardcore model. But why would someone buy it?

As Toyota’s LMP1 cars dominated last weekend’s Le Mans 24 Hour race, Alpine was also in a league of its own in the LMP2 category with a rebadged Oreca 07 that it calls the Alpine A470. During the week of events leading up to the infamous endurance race, Alpine took the opportunity to launch its newest model, the A110S.

This newest car is supposedly a more hardcore, track-focused version of the normal A110 that was launched in 2017. In fact, the S is more powerful, stiffer and lighter than the original car. However, with Porsche also recently unveiling the latest GT4 variant of its 718 Cayman, does the A110S really have a big enough difference to the A110?

Between the Cayman and its GT4 version, the difference is mind boggling. From a complete engine swap to a more pronounced aero package. Thanks to these changes, the GT4 will hit 100km/h nearly a second faster than the standard Cayman.

The two Alpines though, on paper, seem very similar. The S version gets just 40 more horsepower from its older sibling and loses just 9 kg over the First Edition and weighs 16 kg more than the A110 Pure. When it comes to the looks, there’s not much difference either. In fact, the only changes from one model to the other are the 18-inch wheels with a simpler design and black finish.

Overall, the A110S is around 50% stiffer than the normal car which should make even more fun on the track but I’m not sure that that’s enough. On paper, the S will hit 100km/h in 4.4-seconds, that’s just 0.1 quicker than the standard version. It will carry on to 260km/h which is only 10km/h more than the slightly older car. Finally, costing around the same as the Cayman GT4 at €66,500 or just over €10,000 more than the stock A110.

In my opinion, the two versions of the new Alpine are too similar for the difference in price. I don’t understand why one would pay €10k more for the S when the normal car has very similar performance figures. Furthermore, one could get a new Cayman GT4 for the same price which has more aggressive looks, more downforce and more power.

Let me know what you think of the A110S in the comments. Would you get one?

  • The A110S is in a different spot than the GT4. I think the A110 will have a hotter version coming up, the release of both cars may have just overlapped.

    • You think that yet a hotter A110 will come? And how much will that cost?

    • Same engine in the Megane RS is 300BHP.... There's more to come from Alpine! As it goes, I just saw one on in the metal in a pub carpark for the first time. It's an absolutely stunning little - and I do mean LITTLE - machine!

  • price of the cayman GT4 is 98k€ (french price) so there is quite a gap there

    • Still... Between the A110 and A110S, there's hardly a difference in performance.

  • I totally agree. 10000 euros is a lot of money. that's not worth the Alpine S for me. but I also think that you can not compare the Alpine with the Porsche. I find both cars too different

  • I think the a110s is just targetting the cayman s/gts versions. The philosophy seems to be quite different between the a110s and the gt4

And for the price, I guess they are just checking if they could get more margin from the car, given the fact that they seem to be satisfied by the sales (economic logic there, and not engineering logic). But I agree, it's hard to justify the price difference

    • It's A LOT more expensive than the S/GTS though...

I guess you're right about the philosophy difference although I'm quite disappointed as I thought it would be a very stripped out version of the A110.
