Debate: Who is the greatest racing driver of all time?
Let the great debate begin
After Lewis Hamilton equaled Michael Schumacher's record of winning seven world championship titles, everybody is talking about who is the greatest racing driver of all time. Is it Michael Schumacher? Or is it Marc Marquez - the guy who has been the star of two-wheeler racing? Or a NASCAR driver? Or maybe, just maybe, Lord Pastor Maldonado...
Here's what the DT community has to say.
I'm going for Lewis Hamilton. Look, I am *not* a Lewis Hamilton fan and have thought over the years that things have gone his way rather than him fighting till the very last. But the Turkish Grand Prix made me a believer. Nothing was in favour of Hamilton and nobody expected him to win but he managed to win such a mad race. His success is not just down to the Mercedes, he is truly a great racing driver.
"Sébastien Loeb. 79 wins in the WRC series, with 9 championships and one in second. He’s raced in 180 rally events, so has a win rate of 44%.
Plus a second place at LeMans in 2006, and a gold medal at X-Games. Two Dakar podiums. Two third place finishes in the World Touring Car champs, a 4th overall in the 2013 GT-Series beating the likes of Karun Chandhok and Ricardo Zonta.
Arguably one of the most decorated racing drivers in the world."
"It depends on the Motorsport and I really don't believe that's a question that can be answered. Yea, Michael Schumacher won the F1 title 7 times, but have you ever seen him competing in NASCAR or Moto GP? There's different strands of greatness with racing drivers and you cannot answer the question that finely. You can put all the fame on an F1 or Le Mans prototype driver, but there's tonnes of talent across the board within the Aussie V8 Supercar series or even someone in drag boat racing."
"I don't think there's a single greatest racing driver of all time but there is definitely a group of people who are on a whole different level.
Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz Sr., Colin McRae, Richard Burns, Tom Kristensen and Sebastian Loeb are definitely in that upper echelon for me. Jim Clark and Mario Andretti as well.
Valentino Rossi also deserves to be mentioned as one of the top-tier drivers because he can race in pretty much anything and do well, I think Ferrari even considered signing him for their F1 program at one point.
A huge part of the reason why the 2010-2012 era of F1 was so good is because we had Schumacher, Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton all racing against each other in some way or another.
That plus we had Lord Pastor for the comedy value."

"Stirling Moss - you can't just be good; you gotta be stylish."
