It’s 12 September 1963. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche proudly presents the eagerly anticipated successor to the 356. The new sports car, originally known as the 901, features a 2+2 seating configuration and familiar rear engine, rear drive layout, although this time a flat-six air-cooled engine has been installed delivering 130 PS. By the time the car comes to market it has been renamed the 911 and its unprecedented performance and handling exceeds all expectations.
New models quickly follow, including the iconic Targa, an innovative cabriolet concept designed to meet tough new safety requirements in the US. Named after the famous Targa Florio road race, it features a 20cm wide rollover bar and soft rear window, which is quickly superseded by heated glass.
