Diamond in the rough: Kinsmart's BMW Z4 is their best casting yet

I dare you to find a better bargain than this!

Kinsmart’s array 1/32-1/38s show you that don’t have to spend a lot to get a lot. Every weekend, I accompany my father while going to the meat market getting ready for what we call "Steak Saturday" (a self-explanatory name) at our house. While we’re there, we often stop by the CVS pharmacy next door for the sole purpose of giving me the opportunity to check out the Kinsmart display. Over the course of many Steak Saturdays, I’ve realized that Kinsmart models are, dare I say, high quality. While they aren’t anywhere near the AUTOart 1/43 level, they reign supreme when it comes to bang-for-your-buck models.

Just recently, I found myself checking out this stunning 1/38 G29-generation BMW Z4 during a Saturday side trip to the pharmacy. It’s no regular Kinsmart though, I’ve struck gold with this one. In my opinion, this is the finest Kinsmart casting there is. Yes, even better than their F1 GTR.

Molded grille and vents? Check. A plethora of BMW logos, so everyone knows that you have a BMW? Check. A detailed infotainment system? Double check. You name it, this model has it… probably. For crying out loud, even the soft top is textured to match that on the 1:1! That’s a first. Looking inside the cabin, it’s still quite clear that Kinsmart included some finer details that they wouldn’t have in closed top models. The gauges and steering wheel are labelled with a decal, and the door sills are molded perfectly! As for the shut lines, they aren’t perfect, but the black paint does blend the gaps together.

In short - pullbacks are the ultimate bargain. If anyone knows that, I do, because this currently sits next to my 15(!) other pullbacks. As mentioned above, I found this at a CVS pharmacy, but it is available at stores like Target and Michael’s in the US. If you don’t have any of those nearby, feel free to head on over to Kinsmart’s website here.

  • The details on this model are too good for its price... Kinsmart's 2008 Z4 also had some pretty neat details

  • People sleep on Kinsmart because most collectors kinda skip 1:3x in general. It's the middle child between the smaller but plentiful 1:43 and 1:64 and richer, more satisfying large formats (1:24 and up). And yet Kinsmart is clearly popular enough to gain big-time licences from the likes of Pagani and McLaren, resulting in cars that, honestly, can probably put some 1:18s to shame. Shoot them correctly (like you did) and, like that Z4, none's the wiser. And they're built tough enough to survive tumbles -- because they're still mostly kids' toys.
