Did you know RUF has made an electric 911 back in 2009?

It's called the RUF eRUF Greenster.

RUF is a German tuner (and a car manufacturer since the late 70s) mostly famous for their extreme Porsche 911 variations (like the Yellowbird), and their own cars based on Porsche chassis (like the CTR3). But did you know that even though rumors about an electric 911 have started after the 992 gen was presented, RUF has done that with the 997 11 years ago?

Everybody gangsta until the electric 911 Targa pulls up.

Everybody gangsta until the electric 911 Targa pulls up.

Firstly - the looks.

It ain't much, really. No sealed grilles, no "Eco" badges, and at first, you won't notice the fact there are no exhaust pipes at the rear. But - the targa top is similar to the one seen on the 991 (which hasn't come out yet at the moment), and the factory 911 Targa of the time was nothing more than a sliding glass piece of the roof. And, of course, being a RUF, the eRUF Greenster has recieved the signature aero kit seen on the Rt12 and some nice rims.

But is it fast..?

The answer - yes, a bit. 362hp is pretty much 911 Carrera level, as well as a 5.2s 0-100kmh time. Max speed? Only 250kmh, sorry. The Greenster's also RWD, with the super-heavy motor and batteries being at the rear as well, so I suppose that if I drove one, it'll be the most fun EV to drive. The range is pretty decent for 2009 - 250km, or 320 with the extra battery pack. The great thing is that it only weighs 1700kg, so I don't think the handling is much worse than the standard car. Plus, the electric motor has almost 1000Nm, all of which are available right after the gas pedal is pressed. Caravanning in a 911? No problem!

Wait... What the heck is a Cayenne with an ugly bodykit doing here?

This, in fact, is an eRUF Stormster, which has the same 362hp motor as the Greenster, but it's much, much slower. 0-100 takes a pathetic 10 seconds and the max speed is only 150kmh.

That's it - hope you liked the article!

  • Wow, I didn't know that at all! I can't say I like the idea of an EV RUF (in fact I hate it), but it's interesting to know that they tried! Thanks for sharing!

  • I think the reason so many of us haven’t heard about this may come from the fact that it’s an electric 911. It probably hasn’t sold in large enough quantities to even warrant any significant attention. After all, part of the charm in having a 911 is the flat-six exhaust note. Cheers!

    • It didn't even in fact make it further than the prototype stage AFAIK. Thanks for the comment!
