Discovering Aussie V8 racing way too late

Why have I not watched this sooner?

I'm a fan of most motorsports. Anything that has close racing and committed drivers giving it everything they've got. In recent years my favourite motorsports such as BTCC and Formula 1 have become slightly lacklustre. The build up and staging are all still there, but the wheel to wheel racing has dropped off slightly, and it's much more of a tactics game. I can still find this interesting, but it's not the reason I first fell in love with them.

I now find myself looking at YouTube clips of 90's racing and reliving the golden olden days where the drivers seemed to exchange paint on virtually every lap.

It is during this nostalgia trip that I started to discover Australian V8 racing in all its raw and brutal glory.

I don't know much about the drivers or the circuits but it really does compete with 90's BTCC for close racing. They have massive V8 engines pumping out so much raw power that the car is hopping and skipping between corners.

The car control abilities the drivers need to wrestle with the V8 whilst guiding the car through what look almost like street circuits are unbelievable. In the clip below, Peter Brock is giving it the full beans at Bathurst. He's not even racing with anyone and it's more exhilarating to watch than an entire Formula 1 race.

I have hope for the new Formula 1 season, but you'd have to strip the cars back to the 80's spec to be anything like as brutal and encapsulating to watch as these V8s.

At 1 minute and 30 seconds into this clip, you can see what I mean by full commitment.

Peter Brock sir, you are my new hero.

If you'd excuse me, I'm going to spend some more time on Youtube discovering my new favourite form of racing.

If you have any recommendation or clips, please send them over.

  • An Australian hero who died doing what he loved, going fast. Killed in a road race in tragic circumstances. He was the best touring car driver I ever saw and the whole nation shed a tear when he passed....
