  • Filtering is among the most rewarding things on a motorcycle. Most satisfying are the times you come upon a massive tailback on a motorway and just slice through it all. No question that you need to be totally on your game though; takes a lot of confidence, judgement, anticipation and readiness to react instantly. But, as long as you're cautious, it's actually far safer than most non-motorcyclists think it is. I can't believe there are places in the world where it's illegal. I cannot imagine how frustrating that must be.

  • I'll wait in line if I can't get cleanly past a vehicle and try to ensure I don't hold anyone up that I've just passed in a queue to a junction/roundabout.

Also I don't shoot through traffic.. Just go 5 or 10mph faster and once traffic is doing more than about 15 to 20mph I don't filter as it's too unpredictable..

  • I ride in London every day, I filter with my lights on full beam on my ZX10rr. Pick a few mph more than the traffic and be ready to do an emergency stop.

    • No, it’ll confuse drivers

    • Now that's why I didn't, but after talking with a fellas that does I'm in two minds. The thinking behind it is, if the driver is about to swap lanes, he sees you coming, indicating and hangs on till your manoeuvre is complete, by that time you've...

  • When I am somewhere that it is legal, I certainly will and have. Once I got over the first time nerves, it became a very nice and rewarding option. However, here where it is not legal, and certainly not common, I won’t even think about doing it. I’m fairly certain that if I did, I would be taking my,life into my hands.
